The IACUC may suspend an activity if it determines that the activity presents an animal welfare or safety concern (through noncompliance with established policies, procedures or protocols or by wrongful or abusive physical or psychological mistreatment of an animal).
The IACUC may suspend an activity only after 1) review of the matter at a convened meeting of a quorum of the IACUC and 2) a suspension vote of a majority of the quorum present. If the IACUC suspends an activity involving animals, the Institutional Official, in consultation with the IACUC, shall review the reasons for suspension, take appropriate action and report that action to the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), as well as any funding agency, in accordance with their specific policies.
The Attending Veterinarian or IACUC Chair may temporarily stop animal use before the IACUC review if warranted because of serious and urgent animal welfare or safety concerns.
