A multi-institutional three-year residency program that includes the participation of three primary sites:
Residents are expected to spend the majority of their time at their respective home institution, but will also complete required block rotations at the two other primary institutions listed above.
Oregon State University (OSU) includes: the Laboratory Animal Research Center (LARC); Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine; Department of Biomedical Research; Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory; Department of Rangeland Sciences; Hatfield Marine Science Center (Newport, OR) and; the Sinnhuber Aquatic Research Laboratory, which collaborates extensively with the Zebrafish International Resource Center (ZIRC).
OHSU is located on the main Marquam Hill Campus which includes: OHSU Hospital; Doernbecher Children’s Hospital; Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, and Nursing and; multiple research centers and laboratories. The OHSU West Campus at the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC). ONPRC includes four Scientific Divisions - Pathobiology and Immunology; Neurosciences; Reproductive and Developmental Sciences; Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism and; the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute.
The OSLAMRC ACLAM-recognized residency program is designed to prepare veterinarians for careers in laboratory animal medicine and meet all requirements to support preparation for ACLAM board certification. The program is three years, with the first two years focused on didactic training and supervised clinical experience, and the third year dedicated to mentored research and submission of a first-authorship manuscript to a peer-reviewed scientific journal. Clinical and pathology training includes lectures and seminars covering a range of pertinent topics in laboratory animal models, species biology, clinical and pathologic aspects of diseases, facility management and design, human resources management, and regulatory affairs and oversight.
The OSLAMRC is a multi-institutional residency program. Residents are assigned to a primary training site with required rotations through the other two primary sites as listed above.
Participation provides residents an unique opportunity for exposure to a wide breadth of animal species, research projects, and faculty expertise and perspective, with emphasis on comparative and preventive medicine. Concurrent graduate degree programs are available.
Candidates must be highly motivated, have strong academic records, and possess excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Qualified applicants must 1) have a DVM/VMD degree or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited college of veterinary medicine (or have completed all ECFVG requirements), 2) have passed the national veterinary licensure examination (NAVLE) by the initiation of the program, and 3) be currently licensed to practice in at least one state in the U.S. Applications are accepted through the Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program (VIRMP) website, where complete application requirements can also be found: http://virmp.org/.
