SCIENCE FOUNDATIONS FOR ENERGY EARTHSHOTS

The Department of Energy Office of Science (SC) hereby announces its interest in applications to advance basic research in support of the Department of Energy’s Energy Earthshots™ initiative. The Energy Earthshots drive integrated program development and execution across the Department of Energy’s basic science and energy technology offices. They are part of an all-hands-on-deck approach to provide science and technology innovations that address the tough technological challenges required to achieve our climate and economic competitiveness goals. The Energy Earthshots will accelerate breakthroughs towards more abundant, affordable, and reliable clean energy solutions. This FOA will support small teams to build the scientific foundations for the Energy Earthshot goals.

Applicant institutions are limited to no more than three pre-applications and three applications. An individual may not be named as the lead investigator on more than one pre-application or application.

The general guidance for the preparation of the notice of intent to the Research Office:

COVER SHEET (1 page) -please use an 11 point or higher font with one-inch margins.

  • Title of Pre-application Principal Investigator Name, Job Title Institution PI Phone Number, PI Email Address
  • FOA Number: Include the FOA Number indicated on the cover of this FOA Relevant Energy Earthshots (select one or more and list most relevant first): Hydrogen, Long Duration Storage, Carbon Negative, Enhanced Geothermal, Floating Offshore Wind, or Industrial Heat
  • Relevant Programs (select one or more and list most relevant first): ASCR, BES, BER
  • Key PI/co-PIs:  5 or 6 sentences or bullet points that highlight team expertise as it relates to the project.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION (1-3 pages) - The Notice of Intent may not exceed three pages, excluding the cover page, when printed using standard letter-size (8.5 inch x 11 inch) paper with 1-inch margins (top, bottom, left, and right). The font must not be smaller than 11 point. 

Please provide a clear and concise statement of:

  • Research objectives(s)
  • Technical approach:  Describe the technical approach.  Please include detail about how a multidisciplinary approach will be taken (if applicable).
  • Describe how the proposed research connects to each of the Energy Earthshots identified on the cover page and create significant impact toward the Energy Earthshot goals?  How will the project build the scientific foundations to accelerate breakthroughs towards more abundant, affordable, and reliable clean energy solutions?
  • Abbreviated CV or biographical sketch of the principal investigator – separate page
  • Optional - Suggest one or two names to serve on the internal review committee.
