The annual call for proposals for the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Stipends is open.

The stipends provide $6,000 during summer 2024.

OSU can nominate two faculty and will forward the supported applications to NEH by the September 20, 2023 deadline. Please follow this process:

  • 1. Consult the NEH website and get the application information: https://www.neh.gov/grants/research/summer-stipends. The left column includes links to the guidelines as well as links to successful sample application narratives.
  • 2. Submit a paper version of your application. This includes a 3-page narrative and a 2-page vita by  June 16, 2023: Using  SMARTSHEET
  • 3. A committee will select the two supported applications to be submitted to the national competition. Those nominees will be notified by July 15, 2023.

Note: Although you need two letters of recommendation for a national nomination, you DO NOT need to have the letters for the local, OSU portion of the selection process. You only need to supply the NAMES of your recommenders for your OSU nomination.

Additional information:

A webinar on the application process is available on the NEH Summer Stipend website.

The program aims to stimulate new research in the humanities and its publication by supporting the work of individual scholars doing research or writing. Anyone can apply, as long as they are not a degree candidate at the time of application. Junior faculty are encouraged to apply. Although this is a very competitive program, the relatively short application and the focused time period make it a good way for junior faculty to lay the foundation for future grant applications.  Note: faculty that are not tenure track do not require nomination via this limited submission process.
