Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

Oregon State University recognizes both the importance of animals in research and teaching, and the scientific and ethical responsibilities required for their care and use. OSU's Animal Care and Use Program ("Program") comprises all activities conducted by and at the University that have a direct impact on the well-being of animals. The Program scope includes animal and veterinary care, policies and guidelines, animal facility design and management, oversight of participants and their related occupational health and safety, and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) functions.
Our Program maintains a Research Facility registration with USDA-APHIS, an Animal Welfare Assurance with the Public Health Service (PHS), and AAALAC accreditation across all units.
The IACUC provides assessment and oversight of Program components and related facilities, which are managed according to current versions of the federal Animal Welfare Act and Regulations, animal care standards specified by Federal agencies and funding entities, including the "Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals" (PHS Policy), the National Research Council's Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the American Society for Animal Science's Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Agricultural Research and Teaching. In doing so, we serve our animals, investigators, the institution, and the public.
