Faculty Steps To Fly a UAS For Research

  1. If you do not already own an aircraft, please contact the research office before purchasing one. We currently have over 60 registered aircraft that might meet your needs.
  2. Attend an OSU UAS Training Course online or in person. Contact Drones@oregonstate.edu for information on classes and online training.
  3. Take and pass the FAA Part 107 sUAS Knowledge Exam and obtain your Part 107 license.

OSU Training Course

OSU's drone training course is moving online! In collaboration with Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) we've developed online training that allows you to move at your own speed and prepare for your pilot's exam. The course focuses heavily on the Part 107 rule along with OSU-specific requirements.

Part 107 Qualifications

There are two ways to quality for a remote pilot certificate. To do so a person must:

  • Demonstrate aeronautical knowledge by either:
  1. Passing an initial aeronatutical knowledge test at an FAA-approved knowledge testing center; or
  2. Hold a part 61 pilot certificate other than student pilot, complete a flight review within the previous 24 months, and complete a small UAS online training course provided by the FAA
  • Be vetted by the Transportation Security Administration
  • Be at least 16 years old

For those without a pilot's license this leaves the ability to take the FAA-approved knowledge test and qualify to fly under Part 107.
