Telecommuting

OSU has a variety of tools available for the remote worker to use for telecommuting

Latest updates and information:

Oregon State University Office of Information Security Secure Remote Work

The basic process for establishing a secure remote connection includes establishing a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection.  You can also utilize Microsoft Office 365 and other tools remotely. Microsoft office.com, Box, and any web based applications do not require a VPN to access; it is highly recommended to use a VPN in your normal workflow for an enhanced level of security.

In order to connect to the OSU network when not on campus the use of a VPN is required for some applications such as Banner, Appworx, and the Grant Reporting System (GRS).

Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Information Services has detailed information and links to setting up a VPN.

Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP)

Download and install the Microsoft Remote Desktop protocol application for Windows or Mac. This is available from both the Microsoft Store and the Apple App store.

  1. Make sure that you are added to the on campus computer as a remote desktop user (requires admin access).
  2. Launch the Remote Desktop Connection (RDP) software on your device.
  3. Enter the server name: computername.tss.oregonstate.edu (computername is the hostname of the device you're connecting to and is located on a label on the top of desktop computers or on the bottom of laptops).
  4. Save the connection to your desktop.
  5. Enter your network credentials to authenticate the Remote server.
