What is COI in Research?

A COI in research arises when financial interests could affect, or be perceived to affect, the design, conduct, or reporting of research or adjacent responsibilities in the university. The existence of a perceived, potential, or actual conflict of interest does not necessarily mean that the conflict will result in bias or adversely influence a person's work. However, it does increase the risk that a person will not recognize or promptly mitigate bias that could stem from the influence that outside financial interests often have.

University policies and procedures for identifying, evaluating, and managing conflicts of interest in research are designed to promote transparency, exemplify shared values of excellence and integrity in the community, and comply with state and federal regulations requiring management of financial conflict of interest in research.

COI in Research: Program Overview

The Conflict of Interest Office oversees and implements the university's research-related conflict of interest policies and procedures, ensures university compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, provides guidance and support to the university community, and coordinates with faculty and leadership across academic departments, centers and institutes, and research administration offices.
