Embargoed and Sanctioned Countries

The U.S. export regulations restrict imports, exports, financial transactions, and services to certain destinations without U.S. Government authorization (which includes an export license, general license, exemption, or license exception).

  • Most activities with embargoed sanctioned countries will need a license. Please work with the Export Control and International Compliance (ECIC) office well in advance of planning any interaction.
  • Embargoed sanctioned countries (currently Cuba, Iran, and North Korea,) prohibit all transactions (including imports, exports, services, and financial transactions) without an export license.
  • Targeted sanctions prohibit certain exports of items, technical data, and/or software without an export license.

If your transaction involves an embargoed, sanctioned, or otherwise controlled/restricted country, please contact the Export Controls and International Compliance Office prior to proceeding and with as much advance notice as possible.
